Miller is denied access to Hitler’s apartment because it is “for officers only”

Scenario

The story of American photographer Lee Miller, a model who became a celebrated war correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II. The production was given full access to Lee Miller’s archives and had the full trust and cooperation of Miller’s family. War correspondents are given the rank of captain, so technically the US Army Guard should have allowed her in.

Included in The 19:00 Project: October 21, 2024 (2024) episode

Lee Miller: [Hands a knife to the girl she just saved from rape] Cut it out next time. The end credits include some explanation of “what happened”; and some of Lee’s original photographs, often alongside those created for the film. Kate Winslet gives a very convincing portrayal of the eponymous photographer, who originally came to London to meet her husband Roland Penrose (Alexander Skarsgård) and works as a fashion photographer for the impressive Audrey Withers (Andrea Riseborough) at Vogue magazine.

Her story is told from the comfort of her 1960s British home to a man we assume is just a journalist

With the rise of the Nazis across continental Europe seemingly unstoppable, Penrose spends more time on the war effort and is increasingly determined to prove that she is every bit the equal of her male counterparts. Needless to say, there is quite a bit of resistance to her involvement in combat zones, but thanks to her own perseverance and an alliance with David Scherman (Andy Samberg), she soon finds herself active in war photography and ends up visiting some of the most terrifying places ever built, and on he sees with his own eyes the truly hideous atrocities left behind by the now-defeated war machine that turned mass destruction into an art form. In fact, his obvious nervousness and her repulsive attitude towards him and his role suggest that she does not place any value on her memories, but the further we follow the threads of her life, the more we sense that there is tension between her and this young man.

Some willingly, some not so much and some – well, they didn’t live to see it

a man (Josh O’Connor) exists more, which puts the decisions of a woman who probably put her career first in a whole new light. Through the characters of Solange (Marion Cotillard) and Nusch (Noémie Merlant), the film also tries to shed some light on the history of those who had to “collaborate” with their new rulers. The staging and battle scenarios aren’t particularly effective – maybe too polished, the script a bit dry, and maybe too much.

Footage that still gives you goosebumps today

But Winslet shows here that she has great talent for a role that could easily have been filled with bravado. Instead, she brings a more thoughtful charisma to her portrayal of a woman whose bloodthirsty courage provided some of the most iconic images of World War II.
