Scenario
The fate of ancient China rests on the shoulders of a young girl who must find the last remaining dragon egg and fulfill her destiny. Adventure, humor, fantasy and action in this 3D animated film. This is an attractive film that younger viewers will love. Superbly directed by Salvador Simó, the film adapts the first book of Carole Wilkinson’s Dragonkeeper literary saga and is set in imperial China, where magic still exists. The film begins with a prologue that gives a historical chronology: “No one remembers the dark times, when the threat of necromancers hung over the world and humanity was on the verge of extinction. The emperor then turned to the only power that could save us.

A sacred bond was forged between the dragons and a select few with pure hearts who learned the secrets of their wisdom. Together, humans and dragons defeated the hosts of Wucheng.” But in the ashes of victory, seeds of distrust and fear sprouted. The emperor, jealous of his power, hunted the dragons and persecuted their guardians. Ping, an orphan, finds one of the last remaining dragon eggs. The palace guards force Ping to flee to return the dragon egg to the sea and save all dragons from extinction. Abused servant Join Ping must find the last remaining dragon egg to become who she was always meant to be… Ping seems to be the last hope. Fantasy, magic and adventure for the whole family come together in this Spanish-Chinese animated film about a very special girl, a dragon (the last of them) and the power to change destiny. The plot follows the adventures of the enslaved girl “Ping” with her dragon companion “Long Danzi” during an ancient imperial age. The story begins years after the union of dragons and humans managed to destroy the necromancers. Now there are hardly any dragons left and the last ones are imprisoned by order of the emperor who is jealous of his power and that of the guardians.
Like the director
There is continuous nonstop entertainment with frenetic action, good staging and adventures of all kinds in which our main characters face a thousand and one dangers to achieve peace and save dragons. The film is technically acceptable with a colorful pop approach accentuated by contrasts of time and space. The story with basic positive messages, enough action and continuous entertainment, but it does not stand out for its inventiveness in terms of humor, originality or the keys it handles. ‘Dragonkeeper’ takes us on an adventure where imagination triumphs over everything else, although everything else is equally exciting. Here we have the rebellion of an orphan girl who wants to make her decisions, the overcoming of the traumas of the seemingly brave and determined heroine who suffered from slavery and loneliness in the past. There is a good and lively score by Arturo Cardelús.

It was nominated at the 2024 Málaga Spanish Film Festival: Nomination for the Golden Biznaga in the Best Spanish Film category, Salvador Simó and Jianping Li. Salvador Simó previously worked in the animation department of various films, such as: E.g.: A Summer Dream, Goofy and His Son, The Great Howl, The Three Mellikas, The Legend of El Cid, It’s All Christmas Again, Charlie Brown and others. His big success: “Buñuel and the Labyrinth of the Turtles” (2018), which won the Goya Award and the European Film Award for Best Animated Film. Dragonkeeper (2024) Rating: 6.5/10. Good computer-generated animation, especially recommended for the youngest members of the family.
