Irena Gut Opdyke: What does it matter who we are?

Through the eyes of a strong woman, we learn the extraordinary story of Irena Gut and the triumph of the human spirit over devastating tragedy as she risked her life to save a generation of Jews from the horrors of the Holocaust. Although this Canadian film was released in Canadian cinemas on a much larger scale than typical Canadian films, for some reason its distributor, Elevation Pictures, decided not to allocate a significant budget for its marketing. As a result, the film was a box office failure and was pulled from most cinemas by the end of its third week of release.

What we do reflects who we are

I admit that I have not been up to date with film releases over the past few years, as my knowledge has been based mainly on ad hoc information from streaming services. I had not heard of this film until I watched it on Showtime a few nights ago.

Now, onto the film itself

I knew almost as much about everyone involved in the film. I rarely write notes on IMDb, but this time I am prompted to do so by the undeserved, mediocre overall rating, skewed by one review that I find laughable in every way. As others have noted, the acting and production values may be uneven, but what a story!

There are many elements of Schindler’s List here, but this is even more remarkable because the main character is not in a privileged position at all

Others have summed up the plot well; I won’t go into it here, but as impressive as the story is, even more impressive is the moral complexity and humanity of nearly all the characters, even the Germans, and the astuteness of the filmmaker that, while we’re not the main bad guys here, the Soviets have almost as much to answer for as the Nazis for their actions during this time, which goes against the grain of the “good fight” misnomer (as do many other things completely unrelated to this film, like the internment of Japanese Americans, the bombing of civilians in Germany and Japan, the indifference to the fate of European Jews, etc., etc.). I often get emotional watching good movies, but I have to admit that tears come to my eyes when I watch the rest of the stories of the real heroes that appear in the credits (don’t miss it!). In my opinion, this is somewhere between an 8 and a 9, but considering the brilliance of the story and the need to raise the overall rating, the game deserves recognition.

I highly recommend it

It is worth noting that although the film is not Polish, its action takes place in Poland, which makes it, alongside “Forgotten Love”, a duet of the two best films I have seen in recent years.
